Cruising Aboard the Sky Princess – Norway & Iceland Adventure
After a relaxing day at sea, our journey aboard the Sky Princess brought us to our very first port of call—Haugesund, Norway. Nestled between the North Sea and majestic fjords, this coastal town is often called the “Homeland of the Viking Kings”, and it was the perfect introduction to Norway’s rich history and natural beauty.
We disembarked to clear skies and crisp Scandinavian air. Haugesund may be small, but it packs a punch with charm and culture. Our first stop was the Haraldshaugen National Monument, a striking obelisk said to mark the burial site of Harald Fairhair, Norway’s first king. Surrounded by stone cairns and sweeping views of the sea, the monument is both peaceful and powerful—a reminder of the region’s deep Viking roots.
From there, we strolled along Haraldsgata, the main pedestrian shopping street, where modern boutiques sit alongside historic buildings. It was the perfect spot to grab a coffee, browse for souvenirs, and soak up local life. We even spotted a few quirky street art installations along the way—unexpected delights that made us smile.
No visit to Haugesund would be complete without a walk along the harbor. Fishing boats bobbed gently in the water, and the sea breeze carried the scent of salt and pine. For lunch, we enjoyed a taste of the local catch—fresh salmon and shrimp open-faced sandwiches that were as beautiful as they were delicious.
This peaceful town also surprised us with its ties to the film industry—Haugesund hosts Norway’s international film festival each year, earning it the nickname “Norway’s Hollywood.” Who knew?
As we sailed away in the evening, the low sun cast a golden glow across the coastline, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Haugesund offered a little bit of everything: history, culture, nature, and warmth—both from the sun and the people.
