Olden, Norway: Still Waters, Towering Peaks & Timeless Charm

July 2, 2025 – Port Stop: Olden

Our journey through the Norwegian fjords brought us to the peaceful village of Olden — a small but strikingly beautiful spot at the inner end of the Nordfjord. With its quiet charm, mirror-like waters, and dramatic mountain backdrop, Olden felt like stepping into a serene Nordic postcard.

Rather than heading off on a high-adventure excursion, we chose to spend the day simply exploring the area on foot — and it was the perfect decision.

The village itself is dotted with colorful homes, tidy gardens, and spectacular views in every direction. A short walk brought us to Old Olden Church, a tiny red wooden church built in 1759. Though no longer in regular use, it stands with quiet dignity amid the trees and fields, surrounded by a peaceful cemetery that tells the story of generations past.

Just a little farther along, we came to New Olden Church, the white structure that now serves as the town’s main place of worship. Built in 1934, it sits gracefully against the backdrop of towering mountains and waterfalls. The contrast between the two churches — old and new — felt like a beautiful symbol of how Norwegian culture honors its history while embracing the present.

After our walk, we followed a gentle riverside path, where we were treated to views of cascading waterfalls and quiet meadows dotted with grazing sheep. Eventually, we made our way to a cozy café near the waterfront for some local refreshments. Simple, delicious, and perfectly earned.

Olden may be small, but it leaves a big impression — a reminder that travel doesn’t always have to be fast-paced or far-reaching to be deeply meaningful.
