Discovering Akureyri: Northern Iceland’s Hidden Gem

Port Stop – July 5 | Sky Princess Norway & Iceland Cruise

Tucked into the shores of Iceland’s longest fjord, Akureyri is a charming city that surprises and delights. Known as the “Capital of the North,” it’s the second-largest urban area in Iceland, but its warm small-town feel and walkable city center make it easy to explore in just a day.

Our visit began with a short uphill walk to Akureyrarkirkja, the striking Lutheran church that towers above the town. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson (the same architect behind Reykjavík’s Hallgrímskirkja), this modernist church is one of Akureyri’s most recognizable landmarks. The dramatic concrete façade and twin spires are impressive from the outside, but the inside holds its own quiet beauty — including a stunning ship suspended from the ceiling, a traditional symbol of protection for seafarers. The view from the church steps also offers a fantastic overlook of the harbor and surrounding mountains.

From there, we strolled through town toward another gem: the Akureyri Botanical Garden (Lystigarðurinn). It’s one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world and a peaceful haven bursting with color in the middle of Icelandic summer. Despite its latitude, the garden features over 7,000 species of plants — both native Icelandic varieties and others from around the globe that somehow thrive this far north.

Wandering along its winding paths felt like stepping into a secret world. We saw delicate arctic poppies, blooming rhododendrons, and even a few palm-like plants defying the odds. It’s an ideal place to slow down and soak in the beauty of Iceland’s resilient flora.

Akureyri left us enchanted. Between the awe-inspiring church, the serene garden, and the backdrop of fjord and mountain, it’s easy to see why so many fall in love with this northern port.
