A Day in Ålesund: Exploring Godøy & Giske – Norway’s Coastal Gems

Posted July 3, 2025 | by Mosaic Voyages & Tours

Our journey aboard the Sky Princess brought us to the charming port of Ålesund, Norway on July 3rd—a city known for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture, breathtaking coastal landscapes, and dramatic fjord views. While Ålesund itself is worth exploring, we chose to venture beyond the city limits on an enriching excursion to Godøy and Giske, two picturesque islands steeped in history, legend, and natural beauty.

Cruising Through Coastal Norway

As we sailed into Ålesund in the early morning light, the town’s colorful buildings and surrounding mountains painted a postcard-perfect scene. It’s no wonder Ålesund is often referred to as one of the most beautiful towns in Norway. After a warm welcome onshore, we boarded our coach and headed out of the city to begin our island adventure.

Giske – The Island of Chieftains

Our first stop was Giske, a flat, fertile island that was once home to powerful Viking chieftains. Giske is closely tied to Norway’s medieval past, and its highlight is the Giske Church, a white marble stone church dating back to the 12th century. Modest in size but rich in history, it felt like stepping back in time. The island itself is peaceful, with rolling farmland and views of the sea in every direction—a contrast to the more rugged terrain of mainland Norway.

Godøy – Coastal Majesty & Sea Views

From Giske, we continued to Godøy, an island known for its dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. We made our way to the small fishing village of Alnes, nestled at the base of towering hills with the ocean on its doorstep. The star of the show here is the Alnes Lighthouse—a striking red-and-white beacon that has watched over the coast since 1852. The lighthouse museum and café offered a warm spot to enjoy traditional Norwegian cake and coffee, all while soaking in panoramic views of the Norwegian Sea.

The island’s rugged beauty was mesmerizing. The wild waves, green hills, and sense of isolation make it easy to see why artists and nature-lovers are drawn here. It’s a place where time seems to slow down.

Returning to Ålesund

After exploring the islands, we made our way back to Ålesund with a deeper appreciation for the region’s maritime culture and Viking heritage. Back on the ship, we enjoyed watching the sun linger in the sky well into the evening—a unique summer gift above the Arctic Circle.

Travel Tip:
For those considering a stop in Ålesund, an excursion to Godøy and Giske offers a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience. Be sure to bring layers—it can get breezy by the water—and don’t miss the chance to try a fresh waffle at the lighthouse!
