Our stop in Grundarfjörður, tucked along the dramatic Snæfellsnes Peninsula, felt like entering the pages of a Nordic fairytale. Before setting out on our shore excursion, we had time to explore the port town itself — a peaceful harbor framed by sharp mountain peaks and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain in the distance. The quiet charm of the village, with its fishing boats bobbing in the water and a backdrop of striking scenery, offered a perfect start to the day.
From there, we joined our tour to Arnarstapi, traveling along a coastal route dotted with small, weathered fishing communities, each one exuding Icelandic character and seafaring heritage. These quiet villages, nestled between lava fields and the sea, felt like timeless snapshots of a rugged life shaped by nature.
One of the most magical moments of the day came during our stop in Snæfellsjökull National Park, where we visited a windswept black sand beach framed by volcanic rock formations. The raw beauty of the coast was surreal — jagged cliffs, rolling surf, and the contrast of dark sands meeting icy blue water. As if to emphasize the enchantment of the place, a wedding couple was having their photos taken on the beach. The bride’s white gown, draped over the craggy rocks, creating a striking contrast against the volcanic backdrop. It was a perfect reminder that Iceland is a land where love, nature, and myth come together effortlessly.
Continuing to Arnarstapi, we were immersed in a dramatic lava-formed landscape of arches, sea stacks, and basalt cliffs shaped by wind and waves. The coastal walking trail between Arnarstapi and Hellnar offered jaw-dropping views and a feeling of stepping into another world — one still inhabited by the legends of elves and trolls that permeate local folklore.
From volcanic beaches and tiny ports to mythic rock formations and unexpected romance, Grundarfjörður and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula gave us a day of wonder and discovery we won’t soon forget. This corner of Iceland captures the imagination in a way few places can — wild, mystical, and deeply memorable.
